Sharp HealthCare will hold a blood drive on Saturday amid a nationwide shortage that prompted an emergency appeal from the American Red Cross.

The shortage follows a difficult Fourth of July week for blood donations, and type O is especially in short supply.

Sharp’s drive is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 8695 Spectrum Center Blvd. in Kearny Mesa. Donors can schedule their appointment online.

The San Diego healthcare provider is fulfilling a pledge to collect 1,000 units of blood in 2018 for the San Diego Blood Bank.

Donors who want to help are advised to drink plenty of fluids prior to donation and avoid fatty foods.
