Geeks, Beer & Art
Another pop-culture phenomenon is coming to San Diego this summer, InterGalactiCon. As a preview, the organizers are partnering with another San Diego icon, craft beer.
Trekkies, Jedis, warlocks and cosplayers are invited to Geeks, Beer & Art at Intergalactic Brewery in Mira Mesa on Friday for a free art exhibition in anticipation of InterGalactiCon, a new San Diego convention launching this summer.
Official InterGalactiCon artwork created by renowned San Diego illustrator Rocky Roark will be auctioned for charity. Attendees can also join students of Little Fish Comic Book Studio in creating an InterGalactiCon-themed mural live at the event.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Kevin Workman Foundation, a nonprofit whose work includes supporting homeless and at-risk youth artists with industry mentors.
The event goes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and is free to attend.
CityBeat Beer Fest
It’s a not a true San Diego weekend without a beer festival of some sort. Face it, we love our beers and are snobby about it.
The CityBeat Beer Fest, the marriage of two of San Diego’s best-known exports — music and craft beers, returns this weekend.
The event features performances from local bands who matched well with local brewers in diversity and dynamism. Part of the proceeds goes to benefit the San Diego Music Foundation.

The free event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. features more than 40 green vendors, an “artist alley” with environmental art, pop-up musical performances, yoga classes, electric-vehicle test drives, a farmers market and lots of healthy food.
Guests are encouraged to ride their bicycles to the park, where a bike valet will be on hand to park and watch over your ride.
30th Annual America’s Schooner Cup
Here’s your chance to race the state of California’s official tall ship, the aptly named Californian, for a good cause.
The Californian will race against schooners of all sizes in the 30th Annual America’s Schooner Cup Charity Regatta. The event is a fundraiser for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society that helps meet the emergent financial needs of active duty and retired sailors, Marines and their families.
There is no sailing experience necessary to join the crew. If sailing isn’t your thing and you still want to see tall ships race against each other, you can board the San Salvador, the replica of Cabrillo’s galleon.
The event goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $70 for adults and $48 for children to sail on the Californian, and $99 for adults, $94 for seniors and $59 for students 13 to 17 years of age for the San Salvador.
