A husband rushing his pregnant wife to the hospital crashed early Monday in University City, but nobody was injured in the accident and by the time emergency crews arrived, the family’s van had three occupants instead of two.
The conditions of the mother and her newborn baby weren’t immediately known, though paramedics told dispatchers both appeared to be in good health. Footage from 10News showed the mother and her new child being calmly removed from the back of an ambulance at Scripps Memorial Hospital.
That was apparently where the father was headed just before 3 a.m. when he crashed the minivan on Genesee Avenue after exiting Interstate 5, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said. It wasn’t immediately clear when the mother delivered the baby, but by the time police and paramedics arrived, so had the baby.
The 10News footage showed damage to the right front fender of the van, which was towed away from the scene as the family was taken to the hospital in the ambulance.
