The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Thursday for northeastern San Diego County, including for Borrego Springs and nearby canyon areas.
The NWS statement was issued at 5:01 p.m. and remains in effect through 8 p.m.
“Flash flooding will be possible in or close to Borrego Springs as water from canyons drains locally into the desert,” according to the NWS.
In addition to Borrego Springs, areas that “will likely experience flooding” include Highway 78 between Borrego Springs Road and Ocotillo Wells; Highway S-22 between Ranchita and Borrego Springs; Borrego Palm Canyon, Highway S-22 between Borrego Springs and the Imperial County line; and Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, the NWS stated.
“Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life,” the NWS statement read.
The expected flooding is being brought on by a thunderstorm that is producing heavy rains in the area.
The NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area at 5:22 p.m. through 6:15 p.m.
According to the agency, the thunderstorm may produce penny-sized hail with wind gusts up to 60 mph.
“Expect damage to roofs, siding and trees,” the NWS warned.
