Unhappy with their humdrum, builder-grade kitchen in Rancho Santa Fe, these homeowners wanted something that would allow them and their four kids to do what they love most: entertain.

Interior designer Kari Arendsen and her team at Intimate Living Interiors responded by gutting the space, adding more storage, installing an extra-large stove for whipping up large meals for numerous guests, and creating a custom island that can accommodate everything from prep work to serving. A reclaimed wood plank, bold turquoise backsplash and custom dining nook add character, while durable materials, like bleached oak floors and marble counters, will suit this active family for years to come. How to Rock Turquoise Indoors.

The sink’s previous location determined the layout of the space, since the homeowners wanted to avoid moving any plumbing. They also wanted to have a clear view of the backyard when doing dishes.

A French armoire adds storage for mugs and cookware. “It’s a refreshing departure from just doing all cabinets,” Arendsen says.

Turquoise arabesco tile is repeated in the backsplash and the custom island’s built-in pet food area. The repeating color and pattern create symmetry and flow without taking away from the clean look of the custom white paint grade maple cabinetry and bleached oak floors.

The home is part of a development community, and Arendsen wanted to make this new kitchen stand out. The mix of textures — Calacatta marble, arabesco tile and the worn metal of the chandelier — give the kitchen character and depth. Go Rustic With a Low-Hanging Metal Chandelier.

The wooden plank above the stove was found at a reclaimed-wood yard. Arendsen and her team screwed a small, unique piece of metal hardware they found in San Francisco to the plank.

The previously tiny dining room that was attached to the kitchen is now a cozy nook and bar area that seats 16 people. The custom tables have removable glass tops so the family can rotate in various design patterns underneath.

The zinc and leather benches were added with the growing children in mind. Wear and tear over time will add character to the materials. Chairs of Every Style to Seat the Whole Family.
