Heat wave headlines are focused on record-breaking temperatures across the Southland, including one for the history books Tuesday in Ocotillo Wells when the mercury rose to 124 degrees.

But high/low temperature differences in East County San Diego are worth noting too.

In Campo, Wednesday’s high reached 102, but the overnight low is expected to drop to 55 — a difference of 47 degrees. Alpine’s late afternoon reading was 97 Wednesday, but nighttime temps will fall significantly to a low of 60 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

How much relief will Ocotillo Wells get tonight? While an excessive heat warning remains in effect in the deserts through 9 p.m. Sunday, the low-lying community will get some overnight relief: The late afternoon high climbed to 118 degrees, with nighttime cooling expected at a balmy 87, according to the NWS.

Compare those temperature variances to the milder coastal city of Del Mar, where the daytime high climbed to 65 degrees Wednesday and the overnight low is forecast to dip just a paltry 2 degrees to 63.
