Ten days after vanishing near Mexico City on a migrant-rights trip, Border Angels’ activist Hugo Castro was reported back in California, recovering from serious injuries.
Castro’s partner, Gabriela “Gaba” Cortés, announced his return Sunday on Facebook, but gave few details on the man she hailed as “warrior.”
“You are doing really well!” she said in Spanish. “At this time, [he] still isn’t receiving visitors, but he knows about all your love and support.”
She renewed her call for donations to his GoFundMe account to help with medical and other expenses.
By Monday afternoon, some 211 people had pledged just over $16,000 in the 4-day-old appeal launched by Castro’s sister, Noemi Castro of Calexico.
A U.S. citizen and San Diego State University graduate, Castro went missing April 13 after posting a chilling video saying he was being hunted by criminals.
He was found found five days later in Tlalnepantla — north of Mexico City — with head wounds and possible brain damage, said KPBS, which first reported his return, saying he was recovering in San Diego.
