A water contact closure was expanded Friday for the Silver Strand and Coronado shorelines to stop contaminated flows at the Tijuana River Mouth from moving north, according to the Department of Environmental Health.

Health officials say the winter storm caused sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River to go through the Tijuana Estuary and spread.

Northward moving ocean currents may continue to further contaminate ocean water at the Silver Strand and Coronado Shorelines, according to the health department.

Signs to alert the public to contaminated water in the area will be posted until field measurements show the ocean water is safe again for recreational use, said health officials.
