San Diego’s Fiesta Island in was named the best dog park in the United States by readers of a popular website that ranks attractions.

The website noted that much of the sandy island in Mission Bay “is designated as a leash-free zone, so Fido is free to romp across sand dunes or go for a swim in the calm bay. Visitors will also find bonfire rings around the island’s shore, perfect for an evening on the beach with the pooch.”

Fiesta Island offers more than 150 acres of off-leash areas for dogs to run and play on the sand and in the water. Additionally, the island features a dedicated, 60-acre fenced area for owners who prefer extra security for their pets.

“We are honored that Fiesta Island was recognized as a top destination for visitors to bring their dogs, and we appreciate our role in helping to create wonderful vacation memories for the entire family,” said Herman Parker, director of the San Diego’s Park and Recreation Department.

San Diego is home to 14 off-leash facilities within the city limits.
