The San Diego Zoo will observe the 100th anniversary of its founding with special events Sunday morning.

The zoo plans to begin festivities with a parade, activities for children, entertainment and extra animal encounters. At 10 a.m., a special show will be held at the Wegeforth Bowl that will conclude with a re-dedication of the zoo to the children of the world.

The theme park was founded on Oct. 2, 1916, by Harry Wegeforth, his brother and three colleagues. They got the idea from animal exhibits at the Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park a year earlier. The zoo plans to offer extra activities to connect children with wildlife and nature on Saturdays and Sundays throughout October.

Next month is the annual kids-free month when children 11 and younger will be admitted free to the zoo and Safari Park when accompanied by an adult. Many other attractions around San Diego will also have special kids-free offers.
