Funeral services were pending Friday for Gary Ernst, the Oceanside city treasurer and a longtime mortgage broker.
According to a city statement, Ernst died of natural causes at the age of 61.
“Our city mourns the loss of city Treasurer Gary Ernst, a dedicated public servant,” Mayor Jim Wood said. “Gary will be deeply missed by the city Council, staff and community.”
Ernst was appointed city treasurer in December 2010 to fill the unexpired term of Gary Felien. He was elected to his first full term two years later. Before that, the graduate of Cal State Los Angeles and Pepperdine served on the city’s Treasury Investment Oversight Committee.
He was also active in the Oceanside and International Rotary.
