A 72-year-old woman suffered severe injuries Tuesday when she crashed her car into a median in the middle of a Black Mountain Ranch-area street.

According to witnesses, the motorist had been driving erratically to the east on Carmel Valley Road for several blocks before she swerved off the roadway into the center divider and smashed into a section of raised concrete shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

Medics took the woman to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, including a broken pelvis and compound fractures to both of her ankles, Sgt. Tom Sullivan said.
