A San Diego-based jiu-jitsu school will host an event aimed at tackling bullying.

Gracie Barra Brazilian jiu-jitsu school, located at 3952-A Clairemont Mesa Blvd., will host a free anti-bullying event Saturday. Instructors plan to offer tips on how to ignore, stand up to and defend yourself againt bullies.

Research suggests that being bullied has similar and in some cases worse long-term adverse effects on young adults’ mental health than being maltreated, according to organizers.

Nearly one in three students (27.8%) report being bullied during the school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

The National Crime Victimization Survey of the 2011 school year found that 27.8 percent of students (ages 12-18) reported being bullied at school, while 9 percentreported being cyberbullied anywhere.

Of the students in the National Crime Victimization Survey:

17.6 percent reported being made fun of, called names or insulted
18.3 percent had rumors spread about them
5 percent were threatened with harm
7.9 percent were pushed, shoved, tripped, or spit on
3.3 percent were tried to make do things they did not want to do
5.5 percent were excluded from activities on purpose
2.8 percent had their property destroyed on purpose
