A wind advisory was issued Sunday, as strong gusts were expected in the mountain and deserts in North and East County Monday by the National Weather Service.
Strong and gusty onshore winds were expected to develop on Monday due to an approaching low pressure system, the NWS said. Low pressure wind will increase onshore flow, which should bring cooling temperatures that last into the middle of the week.
The strongest winds were expected to arrive Monday evening or later, with gusts of 60 to 80 mph over the mountain peaks and along the deserts slopes, and a chance of rain, according to the NWS. The desert areas could experience blowing dust and sand, making travel conditions dangerous at times. The NWS warns that portions of certain freeways could be difficult, including the 8, 10, 15, 18, 62, 74, 78, 86, 111 and 247.
The NWS also says there is a risk of electricity outages because peak gusts above 80 mph are capable of damaging power lines, where the infrastructure crosses over remote desert areas. The winds are expected to weaken by Tuesday morning.
