A teenage boy riding his bicycle near the San Diego Trolley fell, hit his head and died Monday afternoon in Encanto, according to San Diego Police.

The accident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. on the tracks that run parallel to Imperial Avenue at 60th Street.

Witnesses said the boy, 14, was riding his bike at a high rate of speed down a steep hill, hit a fence, was launched about 10 feet into the air, then hit his head on the tracks. The Trolley was not involved in the accident.

Authorities pronounced the boy dead at the scene, due to massive head trauma. He was not wearing a helmet.

Trolley service was interrupted while the investigation continued. Trolley riders were bussed around the scene.

San Diego Police were investigating the incident. The victim’s identity was not released.
