The largest Lunar New Year festival in San Diego is officially underway Friday.

The three-day Tet Festival hosted by the Vietnamese American Youth Alliance will host official ceremonies Saturday to welcome the Year of the Monkey. Mayor Kevin Faulconer, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman and Councilman Chris Cate are among the officials expected to attend the ceremony at 12 p.m.

The free festival includes traditional performances, singing and dancing competitions, the Miss Vietnam pageant, cultural booths and foods. About 15,000 people are expected to attend.

Hundreds of volunteers with the Vietnamese American Youth Alliance has organized the festival for the past 10 years.

The festival takes place at the Mira Mesa Community Park at 8775 New Salem St.
