San Diego’s restaurant scene is bustling with new eateries and experiences. But when it comes to the best of the best, plenty of gems can be found in North County’s growing foodie scene.

San Diego Restaurant Week — which kicks off Sunday, Jan. 17 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 24 — features more than 35 restaurants in North County alone.

The restaurants are just a sample of the many that are opening its doors in the northern reaches of San Diego County.

“There are more (restaurants) now,” Patrick Ponsaty, chef of Bellamy’s Restaurant in downtown Escondido, said. “The quality of the food is getting better. Escondido is getting better.”

Ponsaty, a fifth generation chef, said residents throughout the region now venture north to taste his cuisine. One of only two master French chefs in San Diego County, he said his classic French dishes have a modern twist.

“I use a concentration of flavors inspired by classic French (cuisines),” Ponsaty said. “It’s modern because I don’t use too much fat.”

Ponsaty is just one of many chefs in North County that’s getting the spotlight. Chris Powell, executive chef and general manager at Solterra Winery and Kitchen, brings the best of Mediterranean to the coast of Leucadia.

Inspired by chefs such as Roy Yamaguchi, Powell has been creating fine fares for more than 20 years. In the past few years, he said North County’s eatery scene has developed into something unique.

“Downtown is crowded in a lot of ways,” Powell said. “But up here, you find a sense of community. You’ll find unique spaces where food is fresh and the environment is relaxing.”

Ready to venture to North County for Restaurant Week? Here are our picks for must-try dishes.
