There’s a growing yoga presence in San Diego County — whether it’s outdoor, indoor or in the water. We’ve also been getting creative with the practices available — making it different from the typical vinyasa flows you’d see on television.

If you’re new to yoga (or if you want to try a twist on the age-old practice), here are five classes worth trying.

Hot Yoga

Cranking up the temperature and turning on the humidity adds great benefits to a regular yoga practice. Think of sitting in a sauna while practicing moves like downward dog and tree. Try it at Sol Yoga in La Jolla where classes are held in temperatures ranging from 80 to 98 degrees.

Paddle Board

Take advantage of the region’s beautiful environment with paddle board yoga. Each yogi jumps on a paddle board in the water while doing classic postures. The paddle board can provide an extra boost of mental stamina. Try it at Floating Yogis in Carlsbad.

Yoga Sculpt

Are you interested in the benefits of yoga but you think you’ll miss your weights? Yoga sculpt combines the benefits of an asana while incorporating dumbbells, and it’s a fat burner (just think about holding Warrior 2 for a few minutes while carrying weights). Try it at Sculpt Fusion Yoga in Carmel Mountain.

Black Light Yoga

Glow sticks and bridge pose? Sounds fun, right? In black light yoga, instructors turn down the lights, give you glow sticks and lead you through a practice with cool tunes. Try it at Spirit Yoga in Pacific Beach.

Restorative Yoga

OK, so you’re not interested in giving up your daily fitness regimen but you need a little relaxation time. Restorative yoga allows students to clear their minds while strengthening their muscles. The practice happens in a comfortable setting using blankets and pillows. Try it at SoulShine Yoga in San Elijo Hills.
