Sanyo Avenue in Otay Mesa will be closed from Monday morning through Wednesday evening so Caltrans crews can repair sewer lines as part of a project designed to relieve congestion and shorten wait times at the border crossing.
Sanyo Road is expected to remain closed from Airway to Otay Mesa roads until 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Caltrans.
State transit officials said the sewer line repairs would take place during daytime hours, and those nearby may hear noise from excavation and/or moving equipment. Local businesses will be open as usual and pedestrian access will not be affected.
Northbound traffic on Sanyo Avenue will be directed to head east on Airway Road, north on Enrico Fermi Drive, then west on Otay Mesa Road. Southbound motorists will use the same detour route in the opposite direction, according to Caltrans.
The work is part of the $112 million first segment of the State Route 11/Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Project, which is expected to be completed early next year.
Plans for subsequent stages of construction will include adding a tolled portion of SR-11from Enrico Fermi Drive to Siempre Viva Road and building a new port of entry.
