Abandoned animals in San Diego County got a boost on Saturday from Assemblyman Brian Maienschein and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals when they kicked off their second annual “Donation Drive for Animals.”

The weeklong donation drive will run through Dec. 12 with donated items used to help homeless animals and promote adoption. Requested items include: blankets, leashes, collars, cat and kitten food, dog and puppy food, cat litter and flea and tick medicine.

Items can be dropped off at bins located at North County Petco locations including the locations at: 11160 Rancho Carmel Drive in Carmel Mountain; 13375 Poway Road in Poway; 2749 Via De La Valle in Del Mar; and 8290 Mira Mesa Blvd. in Mira Mesa.

“The annual donation drive is a great opportunity to help homeless animals and promote adoption,” Maienschein said. “I encourage people to help animals in need of care and a new home.”

Maienschein also introduced two bills in state legislature this year that benefit animals and pet owners. AB 316 allows a veterinarian licensed from another state to establish a temporary facility in California if called in to respond to a cruelty case and AB 494 extends protections to the companion animals of people protected by restraining orders issued in certain cases.

Both bills will help animals when facing danger from either a natural disaster or domestic abuse, according to Maienschein’s office.

Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District including communities in North San Diego County.
