Two terrier puppies were getting properly fed and fawned over at an animal shelter today after being found abandoned in an Otay Mesa garbage bin.
A passer-by who heard the approximately 4-month-old dogs’ cries this morning discovered them in a box inside the commercial trash container near state Route 905 and Siempre Viva Road, according to the county Department of Animal Services.
Though dirty and lacking any identifying tags or microchips, the mixed- breed canines appeared healthy. An animal control officer took them to a county shelter in Bonita.
There is no excuse to treat an animal so inhumanely, DAS Deputy Director Dan DeSousa noted.
“It is illegal to abandon an animal, and it is also repugnant,” he said. “If a person cannot care for an animal, they can reach out to various rescue groups or contact the department, either for assistance or to (relinquish) the animals.”
Because it’s conceivable someone stole the pups and abandoned them, Animal Services will hold them until the close of business Tuesday to give their owner a chance to claim them, DeSousa said.
Otherwise, they will become available for adoption the following day.
