More than 300 state firefighters will fan out across intersections in San Diego County Monday as the annual “Fill the Boot” fundraiser gets underway to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Cal Fire and MDA have been working together to help local kids and adults affected by muscle disease for 61 years. Firefighters with boots in hand will stand post collecting donations at area intersections through Friday, according to the agencies.

“Our goal for 2015, our 61st anniversary with the MDA, is to have 100 percent participation from all Cal Fire fire stations,” Cal Fire Captain and Fill the Boot campaign Chairwoman Angel Hendrie said. “This will have a profound impact on our ability to exceed last year’s fundraising total and make the biggest difference for families dealing with neuromuscular disease.”

Firefighters collected more than $50,000 during the past two Fill the Boot drives, Hendrie said. Funds raised this year will go toward research, specialized health care and other services, including hosting a weeklong summer camp at Camp Cuyamaca in Descansomfor children affected by muscular dystrophy and related diseases.
