The nurses at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns were witness to an unexpected and successful marriage proposal in the neonatal intensive-care unit.

Andres Alonso, 24, proposed to his girlfriend, Fernanda Busani, 20, both of Chula Vista, with the help of the couple’s twin newborn boys.

Dad had two tiny onesies custom made that said, “Will You Marry My Daddy?” He sat in a sofa chair with one son tucked in each arm, and the engagement ring box open on a pillow besides him. Mom opened the curtains, realized what was happening, and was both shocked and happy.

The babies – Maximiliano and Santiago – were born on Oct. 8 at 31 weeks. Both babies were just over 3 pounds at birth and are doing well. They should be ready to come home around their due date of Dec. 8.
