A portion of Interstate 5 near La Jolla will be closed Thursday night so Caltrans crews can prepare to widen the Genesee Avenue overpass.
Freeway lanes in both directions will be closed at Genesee Avenue from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, according to Caltrans.
State transit officials said motorists would be able to cross over the closure via the Genesee Avenue offramp. They will be directed to travel on the connector across the intersection with the freeway and onto the onramp to Interstate 5.
The work is part of an estimated $105.2 million project to replace the existing six-lane Genesee Avenue overpass with a 10-lane structure. Plans for the area also include widening freeway access ramps, constructing a northbound freeway auxiliary lane between Genesee Avenue and Roselle Street and adding a bike and pedestrian path, according to Caltrans.
