A predawn 4.2-magnitude earthquake rattled Riverside County awake Saturday, and was widely felt in north San Diego County as well.

The U.S. Geological Survey said earthquake struck at 5:54 a.m. in Fontana, about 80 miles north of San Diego. It was followed by three small aftershocks.

Nearly 3,500 people in Southern California reported feeling the temblor on the USGS website, with most saying there was light shaking. No damage was reported.

A smaller magnitude 2.9-magnitude quake struck Brawley near the Salton Sea on Friday afternoon, according to the USGS.
