Here’s our guide for the top events in town.
Supergirl Pro
More than 100 of the world’s best female surfers will compete in this weekend’s Supergirl Pro Festival Village in Oceanside.
Thousands of fans are expected. The lineup includes reigning Supergirl champ Sage Erickson and former champs Malia Manuel, Lakey Peterson, Courtney Conlogue and Coco Ho, among other world class surfers.
The free event goes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Insect Festival
This festival isn’t for the faint of hearts. Creepy-crawlies galore, Batman! The Insect Festival features thousands of live insects, lizards, snakes, and the famous Madagascar hissing cockroaches.
Children can practice bug collecting, hands-on insect arts and crafts, and even taste cooked mealworm larva (in various flavors such as mesquite, teriyaki, and barbeque).
Entomologists and other bug experts will be available for questions.
The Insect Festival goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the San Diego Botanic Garden. The festival is free with admission to the garden.
Fiesta del Sol San Diego
The annual Fiesta del Sol is the largest community-driven family festival in the County. The two-day event celebrates the history, diverse cultures and people of San Diego.
Fiesta del Sol includes an entertainment stage, a multi-cultural food court, four community pavilions, and more than 100 booths sponsored by local small businesses, non-profit organizations, and corporate partners.
The festival goes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Chicano Park. Admission is free.
San Diego International Fringe Festival
The San Diego Internal Fringe Festival is back for the third year. The two-week long festival brings the beautiful, the bizarre, and the unexpected to America’s Finest City.
In 2015, the award-winning venture includes Family Fringe, Emerging Fringe, Visual Fringe, Street Theatre, and the World’s First Bi-National Fringe!
During the festival, artists from across the United States and around the world participate alongside home-grown talent.
The Fringe Festival starts Thursday and goes until Aug. 2 at various venues. Tickets vary by locations.
Mike Hess Fest 2015
It’s a weekend in San Diego, which means a beer festival of some kind. This weekend, Mike Hess Brewing Co. in North Park will celebrate its fifth anniversary.
The brewery is throwing a bash with 38 different beers from 19 breweries. Guests will be able to have unlimited samples from all the participating breweries.
The celebration goes from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets range from $60 to $35. Proceeds from this fest go to benefit the San Diego Music Foundation.
