Stormy and unsafe weather stopped the Special Olympics torch run in San Diego County Saturday.
The Special Olympics Organization cut the tour short to keep the members of law enforcement and athletes safe from the thunderstorms that ravaged San Diego, San Diego Police said. The relay was cut off at around 12:30 p.m.
The torch run started at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the U.S. border, at 8 a.m.
Coronado police said the flame arrived on the island and reached Spreckels Park, where a welcoming ceremony was scheduled for 10 a.m.
Runners were to reach Ruocco Park on the downtown San Diego waterfront at 10:30 a.m. and continue on to the Cove Park Lawn Bowling Club in La Jolla and the Oceanside Civic Center.
The ceremony in La Jolla had been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and the final celebration in Oceanside was scheduled at 4:30 p.m.
