A six-foot-long shark was spotted about 400 yards off the shore Oceanside Harbor Beach from a recreational vessel Monday, according to lifeguards.

Officials searched the area via boat and helicopter at around noon but did not find it.

According to lifeguards, these sightings are rare and the animals usually just pass through the waters.

The last fatal shark attack in San Diego was in 2013, when a missing surfer’s body washed ashore on Pacific Beach with bites consistent with an attack. Though, the Medial Examiner later ruled the bites occurred after death.

Experts predict a rise in shark sightings and attacks because of the global rise in temperature, causing more sharks to venture closer to shore and more people in the water.

Despite the increase, attacks are still rare, they say.
