More than 100 shipbuilders from General Dynamics NASSCO and their families spent Saturday cleaning up Barrio Logan in recognition of Earth Month and Cesar Chavez Day of Service.

The work included trash and debris removal, bicycle storage restoration, sidewalk beautification, and installation of new trash receptacles near the sprawling shipyard, the largest on the West Coast

“At NASSCO, we are committed to community and environmental stewardship, and take our responsibility very seriously,” said Kevin Graney, vice president and general manager of the shipyard.

“Not only do we strive to preserve and protect natural resources in our own backyard, we are proud of our ability to create and build ocean-going ships that are the greenest of their kind — anywhere in the world.”

Next Saturday, the company will launch the first Marlin-class containership, a 764-foot long vessel that is the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas.

NASSCO is the first shipyard in the United States to be certified for internationally-accredited standards for environmental protection regulations and procedures, and received a leadership award from Gov. Jerry Brown for its environmental efforts
