In the five years since Poway High School senior Chelsea King was accosted during a jog, raped and killed by a convicted sex offender, a run and family festival in her honor has become an annual event.
The fifth Finish Chelsea’s Run at Balboa Park, named for 17-year-old Chelsea King, who disappeared while jogging on a hillside at Rancho Bernardo Community Park in February 2010 is being held Saturday.
Her body was discovered beside Lake Hodges.
John Albert Gardner III, who had previously been convicted and served prison time for molesting a 13-year-old neighbor girl, pleaded guilty to killing Chelsea and 14-year-old Escondido High freshman Amber DuBois. He’s serving two life terms in prison.
The run, which began at 7:30 a.m. on the west side of the park at Sixth Avenue and Olive Street, will be followed by a family festival. The race benefits the Chelsea’s Light Foundation.
