A spill of about 125 gallons of sewage fouled a stretch of North County ocean coastline Tuesday.

Wastewater began overflowing at a treatment plant on Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad when a gate valve failed to close properly, according to the county Department of Environmental Health. The sewage entered Encina Creek, which empties into the surf at Carlsbad State Beach.

Signs warning of pollution hazards will stand 500 feet north and south of the creek mouth until follow-up testing deems the area safe again for recreational uses.
