Peter Beinart, a leading commentator on Israel and the American Jewish community, will speak at a free event Dec. 15 at Congregation Beth Israel in La Jolla.

Beinart, who President Clinton said “raises the tough questions that can’t be avoided,” is considered one of the leading thinkers about modern Zionism. He is a professor at the City University of New York, a columnist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and the author of three books, including The Crisis of Zionism, which Clinton called “a deeply important book for anyone who cares about Israel.”

The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Rabbi Jordie Gerson of Beth Israel, Rabbi Philip Graubart of Congregation Beth El and Rabbi Devorah Marcus of Temple Emanu-El.

The San Diego chapter of the national pro-Israel organization J Street is sponsoring this event, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. , Dec. 15, at  Beth Israel’s campus at 9001 Towne Center Drive. The event is free and open to the public, but online registration is requested at jstreet.org/beinart_SD.
