A large westerly swell will bring above average surf to San Diego County beginning Wednesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service scheduled a high surf advisory for local beaches from 4 p.m. today to 5 p.m. Thursday. During that time, surf heights on exposed west-facing beaches will range from 5 to 8 feet, the agency said.
A high surf advisory is issued whenever larger than normal waves are expected to spur hazards at the beach, including strong rip currents and beach erosion.
Ocean-users were reminded that if caught in a strong rip current, it’s best to swim parallel to shore until free of the current.
