A man who allegedly got rid of an unwanted puppy last summer by tossing the canine over a 6-foot-high fence outside a North County commercial building is facing two misdemeanor charges.
Gary Sartor of Ramona faces up to six months in county jail or a fine of up to $1,000 for each violation — animal cruelty and abandonment — if convicted, according to county Animal Services Department spokesman Dan DeSousa.
On Aug. 28, a surveillance camera recorded images of a man later identified as Sartor hurling the 6-month-old black-and-white pit-bull mix onto the grounds of a commercial property in the 1100 block of D Street in Ramona, then walking away, he said.
The dog was not injured and has since been adopted, DeSousa said.
A tip called in to the agency in late September led investigators to identify Sartor as the suspected abuser, he said. Last week, the District Attorney’s Office notified Sartor by mail that he had been charged in the case, DeSousa said.
An arraignment date was not immediately available.
