San Diego Coastkeeper is expecting hundred of volunteers Saturday morning to help clean up South Shores Park on Mission Bay.

Last year’s Mission Possible event attracted hundreds of volunteers who removed 561 pounds of trash — over a quarter ton — from Mission Bay in three hours. Among the refuse was a sailboat rudder, a metal pipe, a shopping cart, 454 plastic bags, 563 plastic food wrappers and 1,499 cigarette butts.

Volunteers are welcome to arrive by boat, kayak, paddleboard or on foot beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 11 a.m.

So far in 2014, Coastkeeper volunteers have removed 1,447 pounds of debris during cleanups hosted at beaches on Mission Bay and nearby Mission Beach. Marine debris impairs water quality, degrades coastal habitats and harms wildlife through entanglement or ingestion.
