The San Diego City Council on Monday approved a three-year deal with Mattel under which the toymaker will place San Diego Fire-Rescue Department logos on Matchbox fire and lifeguard vehicles.

No money will change hands, but the city gets 200 samples of every miniature vehicle produced. The first is expected to be a Toyota Tacoma lifeguard truck.

City officials believe the arrangement, which includes a two-year renewal option, helps with recruitment and creates a positive image for the the fire-rescue department.

The city and Los Angeles-based Mattel reached a similar agreement six years ago, but it has expired.
