A pollution alert issued for La Jolla beaches following a roughly 5,000-gallon sewage spill was extended north Wednesday to include La Jolla Cove.
Wastewater began overflowing about 5 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of Prospect Street from a blocked sanitation line that drains southwest down Coast Boulevard, according to the San Diego Public Utilities Department. It took crews about three hours to get the problem under control.
The Children’s Pool, South Casa Beach and other beach access points were closed after the spill was discovered, and La Jolla Cove — a popular kayaking and snorkeling spot — was later added to the list of closures, as was accessible coastline within 500 feet to the east, according to the county Department of Environmental Health.
Signs warning of contamination hazards will stand at the Children’s Pool and along 1,000 feet of shoreline on both sides until follow-up testing shows the bacteria count is safe for recreational uses.
