San Diego Lifeguards will staff up early Saturday morning in anticipation of hundreds of divers off local beaches as the California spiny lobster season opens.

With more boats on local waters at night, lifeguards will assist state Fish and Game wardens in responding to emergencies.

San Diego Fire-Rescue cautioned divers to be sure “your training is adequate for the ocean conditions and you will respect your limitations” and to always dive with a buddy.

Lobsters may be taken only by hand or hoop nets. Divers fishing for lobsters must have a valid California fishing license, a spiny lobster report card and must carry a measuring gauge to ensure their lobsters are of legal size.

Daily limits are seven lobsters per person and each lobster must measure a minimum of 3 1/4 inches measured in a straight line on the mid-line of the back. The season lasts until March 18.

The shellfish are sought for their meaty tails, which are traditionally grilled, basted with butter.
