Reflections on San Diego  9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

They negotiated three sets of 30 flights of stairs at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Afterward, they didn’t complain about the stairwell heat or humidity Sunday. They shared their solidarity with those who didn’t come down from the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Roy Staten of the San Diego Fire Department, Capt. Chip Cheney of the Escondido Fire Department and Mercedes Ortiz, a repeat participant, expressed why they went up — again and again and again.
