Elevated surf hit San Diego County beaches today as a Category 3 hurricane off Baja California Sur was expected to bring more waves to the county — and possible flash flooding Sunday.

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazard warning, and said the elevated surf and large tidal swings would result in strong and dangerous rip and long shore currents at all county beaches through late Monday.

Hurricane Norbert strengthened to a Category 3 storm on Friday night as it swirled just off the Pacific coast of southern Baja. It was expected to send a 4-6 foot swell to south-facing beaches Sunday morning and could bring rain and thunderstorms over the next three days, a NWS report said.

Isolated rain and thunderstorms were possible today in the mountains, the NWS report said. San Diego County mountains and deserts were expected be under a flash flood watch from Sunday morning through Monday evening as Norbert sends tropical moisture streaming into the area.

Hurricane Norbert is the second Baja-area hurricane to threaten San Diego beaches this summer. Two weeks ago, Hurricane Marie brought swells to the county that resulted in an elevated surf.
