To combat growing obesity among pets — not to mention their owners — the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is sponsoring a series of “Wag & Walk” events.

Pet obesity is a growing trend across the United States, with 53 percent of adult dogs and 58 percent of cats classified as overweight or obese in 2013 by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention.

Under the humane society’s Wag & Walk program, groups of pet lovers get together twice each month to explore local sights and parks throughout San Diego. The next three events are:

  • Sept. 7 — Daley Ranch in Escondido
  • Sept. 14 — Hosp Grove Trails in Carlsbad
  • Oct.12 — Guajome Park in Oceanside

More information is available online on the humane society’s meetup page.
