Nearly 300 volunteers, including many local government officials, gathered in El Cajon Saturday to build a new playground at Wells Park in less than six hours.

The new playground, designed by the KaBOOM! organization with input from the community, was largely financed by Foresters, an international financial services provider that has supported playgrounds across the country.

Since 2006, Foresters has invested over $10 million with KaBOOM! to build almost 120 playgrounds across the U.S. and Canada.

City officials say the playground will serve some 60,000 children. In addition to a wide range of equipment, the new facility  includes a swing for physically disabled children, and a piece known as the “cocoon,” which is designed to give autistic children a sense of security.

The new playground will be open to the public beginning Wednesday afternoon.
