After being closed for almost two years, people can resume overnight camping at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground in Mission Trails Regional Park, the city has announced.
Online reservations for overnight camping, which starts June 13, can be made at activenet.active.com/sdparkandrec. Overnight stays are $20 a night.
Park visitors have been allowed access for day use of the campsites, but have not had access to overnight camping since it was closed due to city budget cuts.
“Councilman Scott Sherman, whose district includes the campsites and Mission Trails Regional Park, was instrumental in the push to have the campgrounds reopened to campers wishing to enjoy the park’s breathtaking scenery, plants and animals at night,” the city says.
Funds were restored as part of the City’s FY2014 mid-year budget update. Sherman also is chair of the Mission Trails Regional Park Task Force.
The second Friday of each month, the San Diego Astronomy Association meets at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground Overflow Parking Lot to view the universe through high-powered telescopes. On the second and fourth Saturdays at 8:30 a.m., volunteer trail guide offer a guided nature walk that leaves campground entry station.
“We’re very grateful to Councilmember Scott Sherman for working together with his Council colleagues to bring overnight camping back to the Kumeyaay Lake Campground,” said Jay Wilson, executive director of Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation. “Camping here is a great way for San Diegans to experience the wonders of our park at night and during the day, all while staying within the City of San Diego.”
Some 46 campsites are available for reservation on a first-come, first-served basis.
