Where’s the fire now? This updated public feed from the county Office of Emergency Services and other emergency-related sources is posted via the ArcGIS system. Local media use this resource to build their own maps.

A national fire map also is posted on ArcGIS.

ArcGIS calls itself a “comprehensive system that allows people to collect, organize, manage, analyze, communicate, and distribute geographic information.”

Ten years aao, USA Today described the growing business of geographical information systems.

“Ultimately, the system is intended to comprehensively link aerial photographs, images and tabular information with digital representations of street networks, buildings and even sidewalks,” the paper said. “One major benefit of the system: Federal and local officials can use it to manage traffic and deploy emergency vehicles by the shortest route.
