The gusty winds that have been blustering through San Diego County’s mountains and deserts for the past couple of days continued Sunday, but forecasters expected them to begin letting up late tonight.
A National Weather Service wind advisory was in effect until 3 a.m. Monday for the mountains and deserts, where 20-30 mph winds and gusts of up to 50 mph remain possible.
The strongest winds were early this morning and expected again late this afternoon through late tonight along mountain ridges and into adjacent desert slopes.
Forecasters said onshore flow would gradually weaken into Monday, but would still be sufficiently strong enough to support gusty west winds in the mountains and deserts today.
The wind could make driving difficult and kick up sand and dust in the deserts, reducing visibility. Travel on Interstate 8 through the mountains could be affected.
Along the coast, a beach hazards statement for elevated surf and strong rip currents was scheduled through 5 a.m. Tuesday. According to the NWS, the highest waves will occur on south- to southwest-facing beaches, with 3- to 6- foot waves and sets of up to 8 feet likely.
