A daylong celebration is scheduled May 10 to mark the opening of a $49 million waterfront park outside the County Administration Center just north of downtown San Diego, and officials want you to start planning to be part of it.
The grand opening of the 11-acre park will feature the activation of an 830-foot-long fountain that runs most of the length of the park and features jets that shoot water 14 feet into the air and down into a shallow splash area for children.
Live music and dance performances, a classic car show, farmers’ market, craft beer garden and children’s activities are also planned. Expected guests include Mary Roosevelt, daughter-in-law of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who dedicated the County Administration Center in 1938.
County officials said the park was envisioned as part of the original plans but wasn’t built until the project was started in September 2012.
Workers removed the county building’s parking lot and replaced it with an underground garage, which the park sits atop. A building that housed the county Health and Human Services Agency was also removed.
The park also includes a promenade, two expansive greens, theme gardens, shade trees, a large play area and public restrooms.
