The sixth annual TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards for destinations has ranked San Diego as the seventh best tourist spot in the U.S.

According to TripAdvisor.com, the travel website that specializes in customer ratings of hotels and other attractions, “San Diego embodies laid-back California culture.” The San Diego Zoo is just one of dozens of local spots that draw millions of visitors each year.

New York City topped the U.S. list, followed by Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Los Angeles. Palm Springs was ranked 17th.

According to the website, destinations throughout the South, particularly Texas, dominated the rankings, with many southern cities moving up from last year.

The top five world destinations were Istanbul, Rome, London, Beijing and Prague.

The awards are based on millions of reviews and opinions from travelers, according to TripAdvisor. Winners were determined by using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide, gathered over a one-year period.
