Local news in San Diego is drying up.

But you can help us tell a different story.

A recent study by Muck Rack and Rebuild Local News measured the number of full-time-equivalent local journalists serving communities across the United States.

Overall, the picture is pretty bleak. On average, there has been a 75% drop in local journalists since 2002. While this is a national crisis, it’s particularly dire in San Diego. Last year, San Diego had 7.2 local journalist equivalents per 100,000 residents. This year, that number fell to 4.79.

That means there are fewer people covering local San Diego at a time when we need reliable local coverage more than ever. We’re proud to say Times of San Diego is not part of this trend: we grew last year, and we have no plan to stop now.

That’s exactly why we’ve been busy crowdfunding to close out our fiscal year. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by June 30 to expand local reporting — so we can pursue more of the questions you care about, in more neighborhoods across San Diego.

If everyone reading this made a $15 monthly gift, we would exceed that goal. Will you contribute today?
