“A northwest swell will build today, peak tonight and gradually decrease Tuesday,” according to the National Weather Service, which issued a beach hazards statement.

The surf throughout the advisory period was expected to reach 3 to 6 feet with a few sets to 7 feet at favored west-facing beaches.

The conditions will be dangerous to swimmers, especially inexperienced ones, NWS officials said.

San Diego Lifeguard Services  advises residents to always swim near a lifeguard.

If you find yourself caught in a rip current, here are four survival tips:

  • Relax and stay calm
  • Swim parallel to shore. Do not swim against the current.
  • Float on your back or tread water if necessary
  • Wave to a lifeguard for help
