Planning to take advantage of the hot temps at the beach? Strong rip currents and elevated surf along the coast will be part of the warm weather this weekend, forecasters warned Saturday.

A long-period northwest swell is set to build Sunday afternoon, bringing larger surf to the beaches south of Del Mar. Five-foot sets are expected on Sunday.

National Weather Service forecasters issued a warning to beach-goers that dangerous swimming conditions were possible. Swimmers were advised to obey warning signs and flags, speak with a lifeguard before heading in and to stay near lifeguard stations.

High pressure and offshore winds are ushering in temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above average for the coast and valleys on Sunday, and five to 10 degrees higher than normal for the mountains and deserts.

In the valleys, highs are expected to be in the low to mid-80s today and could reach 90 on Sunday and in the low to high 70s this weekend in the mountains. Temperatures in the deserts could reach 90 today and 86 on Sunday, according to the weather service.

Inland, temperatures are forecast to be up to 79 today and up to 89 Sunday. High temperatures along the San Diego County coastline are expected to be 69-74 degrees today and 78-83 on Sunday.
